It's interesting to see how the defining characteristic of your racial/ethnic identities shifted over time. You started by describing them as a child in terms of hair style, food consumption, and then later on - once you became more aware of their histories - you saw these identities in terms of placing you within the political order. It makes you wonder if either of these can be considered 'more correct' than the other? I.e., are on of these ways more 'correct' in terms of defining your identity.

And regardless of this, it's interesting how knowledge of a fact completely removed from either of these modes of thinking (your biological makeup) was the thing that challenged your identity the most.

Really enjoyed this article, I'm a white British-German student, and having lived in both countries can understand the sometimes conflicting identities we are prescribed by others. Great read!
