While I share some of the concerns other people have regarding your word choice, I think the message here is spot on Steve!

You are right - Trump supporters don't go away with Trump; nor should they, they are a part of this country too (these are now my words of course, not yours). But what I whole heartedly agree with is the fact that the Democrats have been entirely incapable of doing what Trump did so well. He spoke to the hearts of the right wing's fears and frustrations.

They are angry that the world is leaving them behind. They are angry they have slowly become strangers in their homeland. They are fearful of what the future will bring. I wrote another article on this, but I think you would like the writing of Hunter Thompson on this topic - although in his context he was writing about the Hell's Angels:

*for the quote to work in relation to Trump, replace 'Hell's Angels' with whichever group you think might fit…*

"In a world increasingly geared to specialists, technicians and fantastically complicated machinery, the Hells Angels are obvious losers and it bugs them. But instead of submitting quietly to their collective fate, they have made it the basis of a full-time social vendetta. They don't expect to win anything, but on the other hand, they have nothing to lose."

This leads to an 'ethic of total retaliation' where they are not voting to win or improve their lives, but reject the future others are trying to drag them into. Sound familiar?
