You should look into the case of Maajid Nawaz. He’s a British Muslim who spent some time in his former years as a radical Islamist, he now is one of the leading figures advocating for pluralism within Islam.

The SPLC marked him as a Islamophobic Extremist — despite also, somehow, being labelled as an Islamic extremist by a similar organization in the UK?

Well it took years for them to change this, in the mean time many opportunities were lost for him. In principle the group is great, and did excellent work in their heyday, but now seems to have strayed from their path.

Nawaz was actually recently attacked in Essex for being brown. His response shows the type of person he really is.
